Midnight Lagoon

Midnight Lagoon is a dramatic vessel done in five pounds of clay. It is a piece that exhibits a dynamic cultural etching at the bottom, done in an aged contemporary pigment. The midnight dripping color of the reef carries the seven sea turtle arrangement — dramatic, etched, and carved reef design filled in with contemporary metallic color.

The turtle work is dynamic in depth and etching, in order to paint the exposed areas like a canvas. The night native sky is a supremely etched portion of this vessel, and metallic color painted into that sgraffito etched design adds a unique modern flare of color. This is a dramatic piece from clay to culture to creative design — a mid-tier piece, but a masterpiece.

My Process

Every Atlantis sculpture begins with the same Gran Nicoya materials that have been worked in San Juan de Oriente for more than a thousand years: local dug clay, sourced slip clay, burnished slip color, and etching and carving back down through those layers to the clay beneath.

Enhanced slip colors and my own application techniques bring innovation to that palette while the traditional methods stay exactly as they were.

And here is the irony: it is the native no-glaze method that opens the door to the contemporary layer. Because nothing seals the surface, I can come back after the firing and hand-paint modern color directly into the exposed clay.
