1 of 1 | Paul Henry Devoti — Atlantis Studio, my studio home in the pueblo of San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua

Some pieces carry the weight of cosmology. Butterfly Jardin carries pure joy.

This is a celebration of color in two acts — and the surface itself is the stage. The background is not paint. It is burnished clay slip, dripped and worked and fired until it becomes something that breathes and moves, a living field of shifting tones that no canvas and no brushstroke could produce. That is the first act: the earth rendered luminous through fire.

The second act is the shaving. Into that burnished slip surface, Paul Henry Devoti carves away the clay — flower by flower, butterfly by butterfly, leaf by leaf — revealing the raw slip beneath and creating a canvas-like area of pure exposed clay. Those revealed forms then receive vibrant contemporary pigments in colors that sing: the wingspan of a monarch butterfly in orange and deep rose, hibiscus blooms in coral and crimson and cobalt, leaves in every shade of living green. The etched detail work gives each element its precision and life.

The result is a vessel that operates through contrast — the complex, dripped background against the clean vibrancy of the botanical forms — and through the tension between what fire does to clay and what contemporary pigment does to the fired surface. Both are present. Both are necessary. Together they create something neither could achieve alone.

Butterfly Jardin is the garden made permanent. The butterflies landed and they are staying.
