1 of 1 | Paul Henry Devoti — Atlantis Studio, my studio home in the pueblo of San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua

Every ceramic work begins as earth. Most forget that by the time they're finished. Born from the Earth never lets you forget.

This large-format vessel is a complete record of its own making — a sculpture that carries every stage of its creation on its surface simultaneously. Raw clay exposure sits alongside burnished slip. Fired indigenous color meets brilliant contemporary metallic pigment. Ancient cosmological symbols share the same clay body with the seven sea turtles of the world, swimming through deep-carved underwater worlds painted in luminous modern color. The 20-day symbols of the Aztec sacred calendar anchor the upper register, grounding the entire composition in the cosmological language that has organized this culture's relationship with time, nature, and the universe for millennia.

The depth here is literal and intentional. Paul Henry Devoti carved deep into the clay — not just etched the surface — creating dimension that catches light differently at every angle, that makes the underwater passages feel like actual depth, that makes the turtles feel like they are moving through something real. Then contemporary metallic pigments were applied into those depths, so the ancient and modern fuse not just visually but structurally.

The result is a sculpture that expresses the complete arc of what Atlantis Studio is: indigenous and contemporary, ancient and alive, born from the same earth that has produced ceramic art in the pueblo of San Juan de Oriente for over 2,500 years, and shaped by thirty years of one artist's relentless vision.

This is the piece that shows everything. There is only one.
