Culture, Clay & Sea is a compact work that contains the complete vocabulary of Atlantis Studio — every technique, every material register, every world that Paul Henry Devoti moves between — unified on a single small form that you could hold in two hands.
The journey begins at the base: raw, textured clay left exposed and unadorned, the earth itself as surface. Vivid coral rises from that foundation in deep-carved relief, a reminder that the reef, too, is born from living material. Above it, the agua background takes over — a burnished turquoise and terracotta field that moves and shifts like sunlight breaking through Pacific water. And at the top, the vessel crosses into the night: a black native clay register covered in fine sgraffito etching, Aztec and Mayan cultural symbols glowing in gold and contemporary color against the dark, stars scattered across the surface like a sky seen from underwater.
Through all three worlds moves the sea turtle — shaved to slip clay, painted in the vivid contemporary greens and blacks of a real hawksbill in motion, crossing from the raw earth at the base through the living ocean and up toward the cosmic register above.
