Copa de Tortugas holds the ocean.

From the moment you see the form — the wide-mouthed copa shape opening like a chalice, the body swelling outward like a deep-water current — you understand that this vessel was made for what it carries. The background is not decoration. It is water. A turquoise slip base worked with the burnished white agua technique creates a marbled, moving field that shifts and breathes like sunlight filtering down through the Pacific. It is one of the most technically demanding surface treatments in the Atlantis Studio vocabulary, and here it becomes the sea itself.

Into that liquid surface, Paul Henry Devoti has carved the reef — etched rocks and algae rendered in three-dimensional relief, painted with the vivid contemporary colors of an actual living ecosystem. And swimming through it all: the turtles. Each one shaved from the slip clay by hand, their forms emerging from the surface with genuine dimension before receiving their painted shells in the distinct colorations of real species — the hawksbill, the green, the leatherback and their kin, represented in the brilliant contemporary pigments that are an Atlantis Studio signature.

The result is not a decorated vessel. It is an underwater world made permanent in clay — a three-dimensional sea turtle garden that is, in every sense of the word, a feast for the eyes.

Atlantis Studio has made the sea turtle a symbol of the studio's conservation values and artistic identity. This piece is the fullest expression of that commitment: world-class craft in service of the world's most extraordinary animals.

Dimensions: 14 × 10 × 10 inches

Medium: Ceramic with turquoise slip, burnished white agua technique, deep-relief carving, slip shaving, and contemporary metallic pigment

Origin: Atlantis Studio — studio home of Paul Henry Devoti, pueblo of San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua

Edition: 1 of 1
